Future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees meet on Sunday Night Football in Week 3 in a matchup between the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.  

Rodgers and Brees are both looking for that second Super Bowl ring, and this matchup between the Packers (2-0) and Saints (1-1) could have playoff implications down the line.

Aaron Rodgers vs. Drew Brees 

Brees is the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards (77,888) and TDs (550), and he ranks third in passer rating (98.3). He’s led the NFL in passing yards seven times but has never won the NFL MVP Award.  

Rodgers, a two-time NFL MVP, is the all-time leader in passer rating (102.6). He ranks 12th in passing yards (47,550) and seventh in TDs (370). Rodgers has led the NFL in TD passes one time, but he has the lowest interception percentage (1.4) of any quarterback in NFL history.  

How many seasons as Drew Brees played in the NFL? 

Drew Brees is in his 20th season in the NFL. He made his NFL debut on Nov. 4, 2001 with the Chargers, taking over for starting quarterback Doug Flutie in a loss to the Chiefs. 

How many seasons has Aaron Rodgers played in the NFL?  

Aaron Rodgers in his 16th season in the NFL. He made his debut on Oct. 9, 2005 with the Packers in mop-up duty for Brett Favre. That game, ironically, was a 52-3 victory against the Saints – who were then led by starting quarterback Aaron Brooks.  

Drew Brees vs. Green Bay  

-Brees is 4-3 in seven career starts against the Packers. He made his first start with San Diego against Green Bay in a 38-21 loss on Dec. 14, 2003. In those seven games, Brees has 2,546 yards, 18 TDs and four INTs.  

-Brees is 4-2 against the Packers since taking over as the starter in New Orleans, and that includes a 2-2 record against Aaron Rodgers.  

-Brees is 2-0 against Green Bay in the Superdome with 634 passing yards, seven TDs and no interceptions. The Saints averaged 47.5 points in those two games.  

Aaron Rodgers vs. New Orleans  

-Rodgers is 2-2 in four career starts against the Saints. He won both starts at Lambeau Field and lost both starts at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. 

-Rodgers has 1,297 passing yards, 10 TDs and six interceptions against New Orleans.  

-The Packers average 28.5 points per game in those four games but have allowed 39 points per game to New Orleans.  

Rodgers vs. Brees head-to-head matchups  

Rodgers and Brees have met four times. Here is a closer look at those matchups:  

New Orleans 51, Green Bay 29 (Nov. 24, 2008)  

Brees schooled the Packers on Monday Night Football in the Superdome. He finished 20 of 26 for 323 yards and four TDs, and New Orleans pulled away with 21 points in the third quarter. Rodgers, in his first season as a starter, finished 23 of 41 for 248 yards, two TDs and three interceptions.  

Green Bay 42, New Orleans 34 (Sept. 8, 2011)  

The Saints and Packers met in the Thursday Night Football season opener – a battle of the previous two Super Bowl champions – at Lambeau Field. Rodgers finished 27 of 35 for 312 yards and three TDs and withstood a Saints’ rally led by Brees – who finished with 419 yards and three TDs.  

Green Bay 28, New Orleans 27 (Sept. 30, 2012)  

Rodgers and Brees put on another show at Lambeau Field. Rodgers finished with 319 yards, four TDs and an interception and threw the game-winning TD to Jordy Nelson in the fourth quarter. Brees finished 35 of 54 with 446 yards and three TDs.  

New Orleans 44, Green Bay 23 (Oct. 26, 2014)  

In their last Sunday Night Football matchup, Brees led the Saints to a 28-point second half in another blowout in the Superdome. Brees finished with 311 passing yards, three TDs and no interceptions. Rodgers, who suffered a leg injury during the game, finished with 418 passing yards, a TD and two interceptions.

Rodgers and Brees continue to chase a second Super Bowl championship.  

Rodgers is 11-8 in the postseason and has a 1-0 record in the Super Bowl. He’s led the Packers to the NFC championship game four times, with the last loss coming to the 49ers on Jan. 19, 2020 

Brees is 8-8 in the postseason and has a 1-0 record in the Super Bowl. He’s led the Saints to the NFC championship game three times, with the last loss coming to the Rams on Jan. 20, 2019.

The Week 3 matchup gives both quarterbacks an opportunity to flex on the national stage.  

The Packers are off to a blistering start with Rodgers and second-year coach Matt LaFleur. Rodgers has 604 passing yards and six TDs with no interceptions through two games. Green Bay leads the NFL in points per game (42.5) and yards per game (505).  

This also is LaFleur’s first head-to-head matchup with Saints coach Sean Payton.  

New Orleans is coming off a Monday Night Football loss to Las Vegas. The Saints average 29 points through two games, and Brees has 472 yards, three TDs and one interception in two games.  

Given Rodgers and Brees have never met head to head in the NFL postseason, it’s best to sit back and enjoy the Sunday Night Football show.
