In a London derby that famously produces fireworks, Tottenham will turn their attention to EFL Cup duties when they host a leaky Chelsea defence on Tuesday night.
Starting with the hosts, while they might have managed to put in a far more polished attacking display against Newcastle over the weekend, Tottenham had to settle for what was a hugely controversial point in North London. With Callum Wilson helping the Magpies snatch the most flattering of last-gasp points on Sunday afternoon, Jose Mourinho was rightfully left furious by more VAR drama. Although Spurs might have managed to avoid some banana skins while on Europa League duties during their stacked fixture list, the former Chelsea boss has been vocal about his side’s issues at the back. While Son Heung-min might have managed to bag that stunning quartet of strikes on the South Coast last week, the Lilywhites are yet to record a single clean sheet across any competition so far.
As for the visitors, although Chelsea might have managed to salvage a dramatic point on the road over the weekend, it does not cover what was another defensive disaster-class from Frank Lampard’s side. Heading into the break on the wrong end of a stunning 3-0 scoreline away at Premier League returners West Brom on Saturday evening, the Blues have managed to win just one of their opening three contests this time around. Despite breaking the bank this summer and bringing in a host of new faces, the former England midfielder needs to find a way to plug his incredibly leaky defence. Once again shipping a trio of strikes at the Hawthorns last time out, Chelsea have failed to keep a clean sheet in 20 of their 21 Premier League away games under Lampard.
