In the wake of the new domestic season getting underway in England, all of the other top leagues across the European elite will be getting underway sooner rather than later. This weekend we will see the continuation of Serie A, the first major league to shut down towards the start of the year, and today we’ll be taking a look at the meeting between Lazio and Atalanta. The hosts have been a dominant force in Italian football for a long time now whereas the visitors serve as the noisy newcomers on the block.
This is the definition of a personal encounter after Lazio only finished below Atalanta on goal difference last season. Still, they aren’t going to be afraid of anyone heading into the new campaign, and they’ll be excited to kickstart another European campaign that holds a lot of promise for them. They got their new league season underway just a few short days ago when they eased to a comfortable 2-0 win over Cagliari and they’ll be confident that they can keep their momentum rolling.
The belief is that Lazio may stick with the same starting XI that began the game against Cagliari, forcing Caicedo to wait for his opportunity to make an impact up top.
Finishing third in the table was an incredible achievement for Atalanta, and at one point, they appeared as if they could go on to challenge for the title. That didn’t end up being the case but they definitely made an impact both domestically and in the UEFA Champions League, only failing to reach the final four of the latter thanks to a heartbreaking late defeat against Paris Saint-Germain. When they opened up their Serie A campaign for this season, though, they were confident and assured when beating Torino 4-2.
Gollini and Miranchuk are both expected to miss the game through injury whereas Palomino has been tipped to replace Caldara. Zapata should be the lone forward for Atalanta in a game that many believe will play into their hands from an attacking point of view.
Factors to Consider
- In their last meeting back in June, Atalanta beat Lazio 3-2.
- Lazio have won four and lost two of their last six games.
- Atalanta have won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games.
- Lazio have scored 13 goals and conceded seven in their last six games.
- Atalanta have scored nine goals and conceded eight in their last six games.
One thing that you’re just about guaranteed to get from both of these sides is goals – and that’s what we’re anticipating when they meet later this week. We think Lazio will be the ones who try and keep it conservative, going against what they’ve been doing across the last few months, whereas Atalanta will try and drag them into a brawl. The official prediction we’re going to give is 2-2 in a result that’ll probably suit both teams fairly well.
