The Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens meet in Week 3 on Monday Night Football in a matchup between the last two MVP quarterbacks.

Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson will square off in a game that should excite NFL fans and fantasy owners who will be expecting a high-scoring affair.

The oddsmakers don’t exactly see it that way. The Ravens are 3.5-point favorites and the over/under is set at 53.5. Kansas City beat Baltimore 33-28 on Sept. 22, 2019.

Just in case Mahomes and Jackson turn this into a shootout, however, we might see a run at the record books. Kansas City has been down this road before on Monday Night Football in the past:

Highest-scoring ‘Monday Night Football’ games

Kansas City participated in two of the top-five highest-scoring Monday Night Football games of all time, including the legendary 54-51 shootout they lost against the Rams on Nov. 19, 2018.

Mahomes passed for 478 yards, six TDs and three interceptions in that loss. Rams quarterback Jared Goff had 413 passing yards and four TDs. Here is a look at the five highest-scoring Monday Night Football games of all time.

DATE SCORE TOTAL
Nov. 19, 2018 L.A. Rams 54, Kansas City 51 105
Oct. 17, 1983 Green Bay 48, Washington 47 95
Dec. 13, 2004 Kansas City 49, Tennessee 38 87
Nov. 15, 2010 Philadelphia 59, Washington 28 87
Dec. 20, 1982 San Diego 52, Cincinnati 34 86

The Chiefs were coached by Dick Vermeil in the 49-38 shootout against the Titans on Dec. 13, 2004. Trent Green had three TD passes, and Kansas City withstood a 426-yard, four-TD effort from Titans quarterback Billy Volek.

Highest-scoring NFL games of all time

A total of eight NFL games have totaled 99 points or more since 1948. The Chiefs-Rams shootout ranks third on that list. Here are the other games that have combined for that many points.

DATE SCORE TOTAL
Nov. 27, 1966 Washington 72, N.Y. Giants 41 113
Nov. 28, 2004 Cincinnati 58, Cleveland 48 106
Nov. 19, 2018 L.A. Rams 54, Kansas City 51 105
Nov. 21, 1948 San Fransico 63, Brooklyn 40 103
Nov. 1, 2015 New Orleans 52, N.Y. Giants 49 101
Dec. 22, 1963 Oakland 52, Houston 49 101
Oct. 6, 2013 Denver 51, Dallas 48 99
Nov. 27, 1983 Seattle 51, Kansas City 48 99

Three of those games happened in the 2010s, including shootouts between Peyton Manning and Tony Romo on Oct. 6, 2013 and Drew Brees and Eli Manning on Nov. 1, 2015. The Rams-Chiefs shootout still stands out above those three.

Patrick Mahomes’ highest-scoring games

Mahomes has been the starting quarterback in four games where the total surpassed 70 points between the two teams:

DATE GAME TOTAL
Nov. 19, 2018 L.A. Rams 54, Kansas City 51 105
Oct. 14, 2018 New England 43, Kansas City 40 83
Jan. 12, 2012 Kansas City 51, Houston 31 82
Dec. 2, 2018 Kansas City 40, Oakland 33 73

The Chiefs-Texas game was in the AFC Divisional round. Mahomes has won the last two shootouts of this caliber.

Lamar Jackson’s highest-scoring games

Lamar Jackson has never been in a game where both teams combined to top 70 points, but he’s been in several one-sided high scoring games. Baltimore beat Miami 59-10 in the 2019 season opener. That combined total of 69 points is the most scored in a game where Jackson was the starter in the NFL.

Baltimore scored 40 or more points in five of Jackson’s starts last season, and the Ravens average 35.5 points per game through two weeks in 2020.
